Lucio Costa
Lucio Costa was a Brazilian architect and urban planner who played a significant role in the development of modernist architecture in Brazil. He was born in Toulon, France, in 1902, and moved to Brazil with his family at a young age. Costa studied architecture at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, where he was influenced by the ideas of Le Corbusier and other modernist architects. Costa is best known for his work on the design of Brasília, the capital city of Brazil. He was appointed as the chief urban planner for the project in 1957, and worked closely with Oscar Niemeyer, the chief architect, to create a modernist city that reflected the ideals of Brazilian society. Costa's plan for Brasília was based on a strict grid system, with residential, commercial, and governmental areas clearly separated from each other. He also incorporated green spaces and water features into the design, creating a city that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. In addition to his work on Brasília, Costa was also involved in a number of other important architectural projects in Brazil, including the design of the Ministry of Education and Health building in Rio de Janeiro. He was a key figure in the development of the modernist movement in Brazil, and his work continues to influence architects and urban planners around the world.
