Loyly Public Sauna And Restaurant

Loyly Public Sauna And Restaurant

Loyly Public Sauna and Restaurant is a pioneering architectural masterpiece situated along the Helsinki shoreline, representing a harmonious fusion of traditional Finnish sauna culture with contemporary sustainable design principles. This Platinum A' Design Award-winning structure, designed by architect Ville Hara, manifests as a slim, elongated building that seamlessly integrates with its coastal environment through its innovative faceted construction and adaptive form. The architectural composition features a distinctive rectangular core enveloped by a free-form wooden cloak comprising approximately 4,000 planks, of which more than 2,000 were individually shaped using advanced CNC technology. The facility encompasses three distinct wood-heated saunas, including a rare urban smoke sauna, alongside a restaurant that accommodates 150 patrons indoors and 300 on its expansive terrace. The structure's sophisticated design employs Nextimber, a specially heat-treated gluelam material that eliminates the need for intensive maintenance while ensuring durability in harsh coastal conditions. The building's environmental consciousness is exemplified through its status as the first FSC-certified building in its region, while its architectural form, kept intentionally low and slim, preserves views and park continuity. The complex's total area spans 1,071 square meters of interior space, complemented by 1,817 square meters of terrace area, including roof and lookout terraces, all realized with a construction cost of approximately 6 million euros. The design's lamella system functions similarly to venetian blinds, offering privacy while creating sheltered outdoor spaces between the core building and its protective cloak, demonstrating an ingenious approach to climate control and energy efficiency.
