Lizi Building Block

Lizi Building block is an innovative modular construction system designed to foster creativity and imagination through open-ended play. Developed by designer Li Xu in 2018, this sophisticated building block system represents a significant departure from traditional construction toys through its distinctive approach to incomplete structures and user interaction. The system comprises four primary forms featuring strategically placed grooves and holes, manufactured from premium hardwoods including walnut, pinewood, and maple using precise CNC machining and traditional woodworking techniques. The blocks come in various carefully calculated dimensions, ranging from 19.05mm to 38.1mm cubic units, complemented by connecting sticks of different lengths. What sets this system apart is its intentionally incomplete nature, where the structural voids and negative spaces actively encourage users to incorporate everyday objects into their constructions, thereby expanding the creative possibilities beyond predetermined outcomes. This design philosophy addresses the contemporary challenge of declining tactile engagement and imagination in an increasingly digital world. The system's innovative approach earned recognition at the A' Design Award Competition, receiving an Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design category, acknowledging its contribution to reimagining traditional play patterns. The design emphasizes organic interaction and discovery, allowing users to explore unlimited combinations while developing new perspectives on ordinary objects, effectively bridging the gap between structured play and creative exploration.
