Lil Picard

Lil Picard was a German-American artist and writer who made a significant impact on the New York City art scene from the 1920s to the 1960s. She was born Lilli Elisabeth Benedick in Berlin in 1899 and began her artistic career as a cabaret performer and writer in the Weimar Republic. After moving to the United States in 1936, she shifted her focus to visual art and became a prominent figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Picard's work was characterized by its bold use of color and texture, as well as its incorporation of found objects and collage elements. She also experimented with a variety of mediums, including oil and canvas, sculpture, and performance art. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Picard was also a prolific writer and cultural critic, contributing to publications such as Artforum, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. Despite her significant contributions to the art world, Picard's work was largely overlooked in the post-WWII period. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in her work, with several exhibitions and retrospectives showcasing her unique artistic vision.
