Light House Residential

Light House Residential is an innovative architectural project located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, that reimagines the traditional Taiwanese terrace housing typology through a contemporary lens. This multi-storied residential building, completed in 2016, encompasses a total floor area of 1,809.36 square meters and introduces a revolutionary approach to modern living spaces by incorporating the traditional concepts of Lian-dong (continuous housing block) and Tou-tian (buildings with roof spaces open to the sky). The design's distinctive feature lies in its sophisticated integration of natural light and ventilation through strategically placed square openings and windows on the southern elevation, creating dynamic interior spaces that transform throughout the day. The architectural composition employs a thoughtful combination of materials including architectural concrete, silicone resin coating, granite, Western red cedar, and stainless steel railings, demonstrating a harmonious blend of durability and aesthetic refinement. The project's innovative breathing pocket concept introduces a series of interconnected spaces - courtyards, balconies, terraces, and light wells - that generate layered spatial relationships both vertically and horizontally within each multi-leveled unit. This architectural approach not only enhances the living experience but also promotes meaningful connections between neighbors and nature, addressing the contemporary challenges of urban isolation. The design, which won the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a significant advancement in residential architecture, offering a solution that balances privacy with community engagement while maintaining strong environmental considerations. The project's facade treatment notably deviates from conventional continuous designs by incorporating recessed sections at internal shear wall positions, creating visual breaks between housing units while facilitating spontaneous social interactions among residents.
