Light Box Residential
Light Box Residential is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies sophisticated space utilization in contemporary urban living, featuring a distinctive floating cubic unit that serves as the conceptual and functional centerpiece of a 76-square-meter residential space. Designed by Kai-Shin Lo, this architectural intervention draws inspiration from the intersection of religious symbolism and modern technology, incorporating a thoughtfully curated palette of blue, black, and grey tones to create a futuristic aesthetic. The design's centerpiece, a multifunctional floating light box, demonstrates exceptional versatility through its ability to transform between various functional spaces including a workout room, a traditional washitsu-style gathering space, and a guest bedroom with a pull-down double bed. The project employs sophisticated semi-open techniques and transparent materials, combined with custom wood frames to achieve its floating effect, while clever engineering solutions such as a hollowed-out bottom facilitate cable management and storage. The space optimization extends to the main bedroom, which was horizontally divided to accommodate a dressing room while maintaining comfortable ceiling heights in both levels. This residential refurbishment project, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases exemplary solutions for contemporary urban living challenges through its innovative approach to spatial flexibility, functionality, and aesthetic cohesion. The design's success lies in its ability to maximize space utility while maintaining an airy, open atmosphere, demonstrating how thoughtful interior architecture can transform limited square footage into a dynamic living environment that adapts to diverse needs and activities.
