Liantan Shi Lobby

Liantan Shi Lobby is an award-winning architectural interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of cultural symbolism and contemporary spatial design. Located in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, this 92-square-meter lobby space was conceived and executed by designers Jack Chen Ya Chang and Angela Chen Shu Lin, drawing profound inspiration from the historic Lianchi Lake, renowned for its lotus flowers. The design's centerpiece features a remarkable sculptural transformation of a structural column into an abstract lotus bud, achieved through three free-flowing curved petals that embrace the column's elliptical form. This innovative spatial intervention is complemented by a sweeping curved ceiling with wood texturing at the entrance height, creating a cohesive visual narrative that pays homage to the cultural significance of the lotus in Chinese aesthetics. The project, completed in September 2019, demonstrates exceptional technical prowess in its execution, incorporating curved skin technology and fair-faced concrete to achieve its sophisticated organic forms. The design successfully addresses the challenge of integrating a prominent structural element by transforming it into an artistic focal point that resonates with the local context. The lobby's thoughtful spatial organization extends to auxiliary spaces, where curved wooden texture walls seamlessly flow into the ceiling, while floor-standing bookcases provide functional elements that enhance the overall design composition. This project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, represents a significant achievement in contemporary lobby design, particularly for its innovative approach to spatial reshaping and cultural integration within a residential context.
