Lawrence Halprin was an American architect best known for his modernist and postmodernist designs. He was a leader in urban design and landscape architecture, and is widely considered to be one of the most influential figures in the field. His work includes the Freeway Park in Seattle, The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, DC, and Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco. He was also responsible for the Portland Open Space Sequence, a series of city parks and plazas which represent the leading edge of urban landscape design. His other works include Sea Ranch, the Esplanade, and the Lovejoy Fountain Plaza in Portland, Oregon.
