Kyonavi Tourist Information Center

Kyonavi Tourist Information Center is an innovative architectural and interior design project located within Kyoto Station, serving as a pivotal gateway for tourists visiting the historic city of Kyoto, Japan. Designed by Junichiro Azuma and completed in March 2010, this 280-square-meter facility represents a masterful fusion of contemporary functionality and traditional Japanese aesthetics. The design philosophy centers on creating an organized, intuitive information space while incorporating subtle references to Japanese architectural traditions. The center features distinctive design elements such as wrinkled aluminum surfaces that echo traditional washi paper, black granite tiles that reference tatami mats, and rough steel plate walls that create a modern interpretation of Sukiya style architecture. The spatial layout, measuring 8,635mm in width by 32,530mm in depth with a height of 2,700mm, encompasses dedicated areas for tourist information (120sqm), office space (65sqm), a conference room (17sqm), and storage facilities (69sqm). A significant design challenge was overcome by expanding the center's visual presence through the innovative integration of station signage, an observation deck, and a stairway into a cohesive Tourism Information Zone. The project, which won a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, exemplifies excellence in addressing the needs of international visitors through multilingual service capabilities while maintaining the essence of Kyoto's cultural heritage. The design's success lies in its ability to organize and present tourist information efficiently while creating an atmosphere that serves as an authentic prelude to visitors' exploration of Kyoto's historic sites.
