Kuss Acoustic Panels
Kuss Acoustic Panels is an innovative sustainable acoustic solution designed to enhance indoor sound quality while promoting environmental conservation. Developed through a collaborative effort between architect Estere Savicka and environmental sciences researcher Vaira Obuka in Latvia, these panels represent a groundbreaking approach to acoustic management by utilizing organic-rich lake sediments known as sapropel as a primary binding agent. The panels, measuring 500 x 720 mm with a thickness of 30 mm, achieve Class B sound absorption capabilities while incorporating an environmentally beneficial production process. The extraction of sapropel for panel production serves a dual purpose by improving freshwater lake ecosystems while creating an effective noise reduction solution. The panels feature a distinctive design with two complementary patterns that create a continuous ornament when assembled, and their mounting system, utilizing aluminum strips and embedded screws, allows for flexible installation without damaging wall surfaces. This innovative design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, demonstrates exceptional ecological consciousness by employing natural fibers and non-toxic composites in its construction. The panels' versatility allows them to be installed as complete wall coverings or arranged as artistic installations, with the intentional air gap between the wall and panel surface enhancing their acoustic performance. The project, initiated in 2017 in Riga, has undergone continuous development and refinement, with rigorous acoustic testing conducted at the Latvia University of Agriculture's acoustics laboratory.
