Kushi Dango Apartment House
Kushi Dango Apartment House is an innovative residential architecture project completed in 2012 in Nagoya, Japan, that exemplifies efficient space utilization and modern Japanese living principles. The architectural design, conceived by Osamu Hamada, features a sophisticated arrangement of five houses and offices on an elongated 15-meter by 50-meter site, incorporating semi-open courtyards within each dwelling unit to maximize natural lighting and ventilation while maintaining privacy. The two-story wooden structure, partially reinforced with concrete, encompasses a total floor area of 499.16 square meters, with individual house areas of 84.13 square meters and a height of 7.753 meters. Distinguished by its thoughtful integration of traditional Japanese construction methods with contemporary design solutions, the building employs advanced earthquake resistance measures at both overall and individual unit levels. The exterior features dry board walls with spray finish and Galvalume steel plate roofing, while the interior showcases refined materials including plaster finishes and premium teak and oak wood flooring with oil finish. The design's innovative approach to communal living is exemplified through its strategic placement of courtyards, which serve dual purposes as both private spaces and social interaction zones, fostering community engagement while preserving individual privacy. This architectural achievement, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional space optimization in urban Japanese contexts while addressing crucial aspects of modern living including privacy, natural illumination, and social connectivity.
