KUN Hotel
KUN Hotel is an innovative architectural and interior design project located in Taichung, Taiwan, that reimagines the conventional hotel experience by transforming typically mundane spaces into memorable environments. Completed in 2017, this thoughtfully designed establishment spans 5,620 square meters and distinguishes itself through its unique approach to addressing common hospitality challenges in tourist-dense areas. The name KUN, an acronym for Know your Need, also carries cultural significance as it is homophonic with the word for sleep in Taiwanese, reflecting the establishment's dedication to providing thoughtful service and superior comfort. The hotel's most distinctive feature is its revolutionary parking arcade, which converts what was previously considered a problematic aspect of the guest experience into an artistic journey. The innovative design employs a sophisticated system of iron pipes fixed under reinforced concrete ceilings, installed at varying slopes and angles to create dramatic archways. The arcade's architecture creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, incorporating stellar elements that guide visitors through what the designer conceptualized as a time tunnel, effectively transforming the arrival experience. The interior spaces are characterized by oblique and staggered floor patterns that extend visual perspectives and create dynamic spatial relationships with wall shadows and dividing lines. The geometric design elements continue throughout the property, including cleverly conceived solutions such as inclined geometric blocks that compensate for low ceiling heights in specific areas. This exceptional attention to architectural detail and guest experience earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2020, recognizing its innovative approach to spatial design and its contribution to advancing the hospitality sector's design standards.
