Konis Table
konis Table is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the intersection of architectural principles and functional aesthetics. Conceived from the concept of a fragment's detachment from the ground, this distinctive table design represents a deconstructed concrete slab that appears to float while exposing its structural elements. The name 'konis' derives from ancient Greek, meaning dust or plaster, which perfectly encapsulates its material composition and visual aesthetic. The table's construction ingeniously combines wood, steel, and plaster to create an optical illusion concerning gravity, featuring a table top crafted from MDF board covered in natural grey mortar supported by a black round steel base. Measuring 1400 x 2000 x 740 mm, this versatile piece functions effectively as both a dining table and a workspace solution. The design's singularity lies in its innovative application of plaster on the wooden surface, which creates the illusion of a hovering concrete slab, while the load-bearing steel base appears to fade spatially through its radial design. Created by architects Balafoutis Thanos and Xipolia Elena in 2014, this remarkable design earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, recognizing its exceptional blend of creative concept and practical functionality. The table's design demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of material coalescence, structural engineering, and visual aesthetics, making it a significant contribution to contemporary furniture design.
