kissa nanaha Caffe is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the seamless fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design sensibilities, completed in Tokyo in December 2019. This sophisticated architectural intervention, conceived and executed by designers Masahiro Yoshida and Tae Fukami, demonstrates a profound understanding of seasonal transitions in spatial design, drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese hospitality customs. The space's most distinctive feature is its ingenious implementation of lapstrake walls crafted from hang cedar planks, which are uniquely dyed in varying shades on both surfaces, creating a dynamic interplay of colors and textures. The design incorporates three distinct wall finishing materials: mortar, exceptionally dark textured surfaces, and unfinished wood, establishing a rich material palette that enhances the spatial experience. A particularly innovative element is the reversible table countertop, which features different color tones on its top and bottom surfaces, allowing for seasonal adaptability. The integration of glass elements containing dried flowers serves as a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese interior decoration practices, where seasonal elements were historically incorporated through fusuma panels and hanging scrolls. This thoughtful approach to design earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2021, recognizing its excellence in spatial innovation and cultural sensitivity. The project successfully reimagines the traditional concept of Japanese hospitality spaces while maintaining functional sophistication and aesthetic refinement.
