Kikuchi City Central Library Municipal Public Library

Kikuchi City Central Library Municipal public library is an innovative architectural masterpiece that revolutionizes the traditional concept of library design through its distinctive BOOK RIVER feature, a 100-meter-long curved bookshelf system that serves as the primary design element. This platinum A' Design Award-winning project, designed by Kazunobu Nakamura, seamlessly integrates form and function across its 21,500 square feet space, drawing inspiration from the region's rich water heritage and the flowing Kikuchi River. The sophisticated bookshelf structure, capable of supporting 40 tons of books, is engineered using steel columns and wooden shelf boards, incorporating advanced programming technology to achieve its complex curved design. The transparent nature of the bookshelf system, achieved by eliminating traditional backboards, allows natural light penetration and creates visual connectivity throughout the space. Thirteen strategically placed openings within the bookshelf structure serve multiple functions, from creating tunnel-like passages to forming capsule spaces, each designed to evoke natural river elements such as waterfalls, rocks, and valleys. The innovative design transforms the bookshelf beyond its primary storage function, incorporating it as seating areas, service counters, and spatial dividers, fostering diverse interactions between visitors and books. The project has demonstrated remarkable success in community engagement, attracting 40,000 visitors (80% of the city's population) within its first two months of operation, and has become a symbol of civic pride, even hosting community events such as wedding ceremonies, thereby successfully addressing the challenge of creating a compelling public space in a region experiencing demographic challenges.
