Khayyam Lounge Chair

Khayyam Lounge Chair

Khayyam Lounge Chair is an innovative furniture design that masterfully combines traditional Iranian craftsmanship with contemporary design principles, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This distinctive lounge chair represents a thoughtful reimagining of carpet utilization, incorporating recycled hand-woven rugs into a functional seating structure inspired by the architectural elements of Omar Khayyam's mausoleum, designed by Iranian modernist architect Hooshang Seyhoun. The chair's framework, crafted from 18mm Baltic birch plywood, features a sophisticated system of inclined quadratic arches that create a tent-like structure, paying homage to Khayyam's ancestral profession as a tent maker. The design employs advanced digital manufacturing techniques, including CNC routing and various joinery methods, to create a flat-pack structure measuring 820mm in width, 1020mm in depth, and 830mm in height when assembled. The chair's most innovative aspect lies in its unique approach to carpet integration, utilizing the inherent strength of specific traditional weaving techniques from regions such as Sarab, Tabriz, and Hamadan to support up to 130 kilograms. This design not only serves as a functional piece of furniture but also represents a significant effort to revitalize traditional carpet weaving craftsmanship by reimagining its application in contemporary furniture design, effectively bridging the gap between cultural heritage and modern utility through sustainable design practices.
