Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station

Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station is an award-winning architectural project that exemplifies contemporary approaches to specialized emergency service infrastructure through its integration of standardized design principles with site-specific adaptations for the subtropical climate and urban context of Shenzhen, China. Completed in April 2021 after a development period beginning in September 2016, this fire station represents a significant advancement in the typology of emergency response facilities within high-density urban environments, addressing the complex challenges of limited land resources, irregular site geometries, and the demanding operational requirements of modern firefighting services. The architectural composition features an enclosed U-shaped layout that strategically organizes functional spaces around a central courtyard, comprising a three-story service building measuring 13.8 meters in height and a seven-story training tower reaching 35 meters, together accommodating up to twelve fire engines across a gross floor area of 7,159.79 square meters on a plot of 5,960.64 square meters with a plot ratio of 0.94. Designed by Zhong Zhong and Zhong Botao, the facility demonstrates sophisticated responses to the hot and rainy Lingnan climate through architectural elements including full-height spaces, voids, open-air atriums, bridge-like corridors, and facade grilles that facilitate natural ventilation and environmental comfort while maintaining the dignified and stable aesthetic appropriate to emergency service architecture. The project site, located at the intersection of Danzi Avenue and Baozi Middle Road in Pingshan District, presents an irregular trapezoidal configuration flanked by urban green space on the east and west sides, with residential areas to the north and the Shenzhen-Xiamen Railway passing overhead on the southern boundary, necessitating careful consideration of acoustic impacts, spatial efficiency, and circulation patterns for emergency vehicle deployment. The architectural envelope employs aerated concrete and reinforced concrete walls combined with ordinary aluminum alloy frames fitted with Low-E insulated glass or coated glass to achieve thermal performance standards while the U-shaped configuration creates a fire engine garage exit and square that facilitate rapid emergency response and provide turnaround space for vehicles, with the western portion of the site allocated to fire training fields, running tracks, and basketball courts that maximize the courtyard as a breathing space for firefighters. The operational layout positions fire engines to exit directly onto nearby urban roads, enhancing emergency response efficiency, while the visitor entrance on the south side leads to public areas on the first floor and mezzanine, with the fire engine garage facing a square near the urban road, the first floor accommodating the entrance hall, canteen, and air bottle refilling room, the second floor housing firefighter duty rooms and offices, and the third floor containing operation and auxiliary rooms, supplemented by multiple roof gardens that enrich the living environment for resident firefighters. Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station builds upon research outcomes from the 2014 Shenzhen Fire Station Standardization Design Workshop, Guidelines for Shenzhen Fire Station Standardization and Individualization Design, and Fire Station Standardization Research Documentation, establishing a benchmark for fire station construction in Shenzhen that addresses the city's growing demand for emergency service infrastructure while providing valuable reference material for fire station development nationwide. The design methodology embraces standardization, personalization, and comprehensive planning to overcome constraints including the irregular trapezoidal plot shape requiring rational layout of the entire fire station complex, exit square, and training venues, the high-density urban environment of Shenzhen that intensifies firefighting challenges while limiting available land resources, and the irregular shape and limited area of the site that complicated compliance with Shenzhen's setback requirements while fulfilling programmatic needs. The project capitalizes on adjacency to urban green space on the east and west sides by creating a rare large U-shaped inner courtyard for the fire station that maximizes internal activity space, improves working and living conditions for firefighters, and preserves an open breathing space within the immediate urban fabric, demonstrating how specialized emergency service facilities can contribute positively to urban quality while maintaining operational efficiency. The architectural expression achieves a square and dignified character that embodies solemnity and stability appropriate to the civic importance of fire protection services, while the integration of contemporary materials, environmental design strategies, and spatial organization reflects evolving standards in emergency service architecture. Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2025, a prestigious recognition granted to outstanding designs distinguished by creativity, ingenuity, and astuteness, acknowledging designs that are amply skillful and strikingly creative artifacts authenticating the vast experience, imagination, and resourcefulness of their designers, with Bronze A' Design Award designated works expected to be highly-regarded, admired, and cherished objects that are notably professional and innovative, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology with strong technical characteristics combined with tasteful use of creative skill. The recognition by one of the world's most prestigious design competitions underscores the project's contribution to advancing architectural standards for emergency service facilities, demonstrating excellence in innovative use of space, structural integrity, aesthetic appeal, environmental impact, functional efficiency, material selection, technological integration, social relevance, cultural sensitivity, economic viability, design originality, user comfort, energy efficiency, adaptability to change, use of natural light, spatial harmony, safety measures, accessibility considerations, resilience to weather, and integration with surroundings. The design team, led by chief designers Zhong Zhong and Zhong Botao with contributions from Bai Yixin, Zhong Haihuan, Meng Meili, Wei Xianqiong, Li He, Hou Jian, Wang Hongyue, Guo Hao, Liu Zhongping, Wang Weifang, Liu Mu, and Tang Jin, represents the collaborative expertise of the Institute of Architectural Design and Research at Shenzhen University and Z&Z Studio, bringing together academic research, professional practice, and specialized knowledge in emergency service architecture to create a facility that serves both immediate operational needs and broader urban development objectives within China's rapidly evolving metropolitan contexts.
