Ken Ferguson
Ken Ferguson is an American ceramic artist renowned for his innovative contributions to the field of studio pottery. Born in 1928 in Elwood, Indiana, Ferguson's passion for ceramics was ignited during his time at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he earned his BFA in 1952. He further honed his skills at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, receiving his MFA in 1958. Ferguson's career as an educator and artist spanned several decades, during which he taught at the University of Southern California, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Archie Bray Foundation. His unique style, characterized by bold forms, expressive surfaces, and masterful use of salt and wood firing techniques, earned him international recognition. Ferguson's work often featured organic shapes, rich textures, and earthy colors, reflecting his deep connection to nature and his exploration of the inherent qualities of clay. His pieces, ranging from functional pottery to large-scale sculptural works, have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows worldwide and are held in the collections of prominent museums such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Ferguson's legacy extends beyond his own artistic practice, as he mentored and influenced countless aspiring ceramic artists throughout his career, leaving an indelible mark on the field of contemporary ceramics.
