Ken Danby

Ken Danby was a Canadian artist who gained international recognition for his realistic and detailed paintings of the Canadian landscape, sports, and everyday life. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in 1940, Danby studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, where he developed his signature style of photorealistic painting. He was a master of capturing the play of light and shadow, and his works often conveyed a sense of stillness and contemplation. Danby's paintings of sports, particularly hockey, are among his most famous works. His painting At the Crease, which depicts a goalie in action, has become an iconic image of Canadian hockey culture. However, Danby's oeuvre extended far beyond sports, encompassing a wide range of subjects including landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. His paintings often evoked a sense of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time. Throughout his career, Danby received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. His works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and he is widely regarded as one of Canada's most important artists of the 20th century.
