Kang Yoonsung Book Design is a significant bibliographic work that commemorates the retirement of a prominent Korean graphic designer and university professor, embodying traditional Korean cultural elements through innovative book design. This distinctive publication, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, masterfully integrates the symbolic Korean tradition of rainbow rice cakes, traditionally served during celebratory occasions, into its conceptual and physical design. The 648-page volume, measuring 170mm x 250mm x 55mm, features a sophisticated composition utilizing five different colored papers - pink, light green, yellow, mint, and purple - interspersed with white pages, creating a visual representation of the rainbow rice cake when viewed from the spine. The book's structural integrity is enhanced through soft nude binding, with white corrugated cardboard applied to the first and last pages, featuring black hot foil stamping. The content encompasses letters from 60 colleagues and disciples across Korea, China, and Japan, alongside an extensive collection of the honoree's design work, including 200 works of images and 500 photographs. The design team, led by Creative Director Sunghoon Kim, successfully overcame the challenge of properly allocating this diverse content while maintaining the rainbow aesthetic throughout the book's edges. This innovative approach transforms what could have been a melancholic retirement memoir into a celebration of continuing journey, reflecting the Korean cultural understanding of rainbows as 'the door of water' - a symbolic pathway between earth and sky.
