Kamiuma House House

Kamiuma House House is an innovative residential architectural project located in Tokyo's dense residential district, distinguished by its unique triangular shape formed by the intersection of two roads at a sharp angle. This sophisticated dwelling, designed by Hiroo Okubo, masterfully addresses the challenges of urban living through its thoughtful incorporation of three strategic voids that serve as intermediary spaces between the interior and exterior environments. The structure, realized in timber construction, occupies a site area of 78.78m2 with a total floor area of 107.82m2 distributed equally across two floors. The design's most notable feature is its intelligent response to the visual pressure created by surrounding residences through the implementation of these void spaces, which effectively modulate connections with the external environment while maintaining privacy. The architectural solution transforms potentially problematic acute corners into functional exterior spaces, resulting in obtuse angles that create softer, more harmonious interior spaces. The house demonstrates exceptional spatial efficiency by conforming to the site's triangular boundaries while adhering to setback regulations. The design's sophisticated approach to managing environmental elements, particularly the direct sunlight from its south-eastern corner location, showcases innovative architectural problem-solving. This remarkable achievement in residential architecture was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its excellence in balancing privacy with environmental connectivity, innovative use of space, and harmonious integration with its urban context.
