Born in Johannesburg in 1938, Mason studied at the University of Witwatersrand and later at the Royal College of Art in London. She returned to South Africa in the 1960s and began to produce works that reflected her experiences and observations of life in the country during the Apartheid era. Her use of bold colors, intricate patterns, and intricate details created a sense of depth and texture that drew viewers into her world. She was particularly known for her large-scale works, which often featured multiple panels that together formed a cohesive narrative. Throughout her career, Mason received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the arts. She was a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in London and was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in South Africa in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the arts.
