Juan Muñoz
Juan Muñoz is a Spanish sculptor, known for his innovative and thought-provoking installations that explore the relationship between the viewer, the artwork, and the surrounding space. Born in 1953 in Madrid, Muñoz studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London before embarking on a career that would establish him as one of the most influential sculptors of his generation. His works often feature human figures in various poses and settings, creating narratives that challenge the viewer's perception of reality and illusion. Muñoz's sculptures are characterized by their psychological depth, inviting the audience to engage with the work on a personal and emotional level. He frequently used materials such as resin, bronze, and paper mâché to create his figures, which range from life-size to miniature scale. Muñoz's installations often incorporate architectural elements, such as balconies, staircases, and floors, blurring the boundaries between sculpture and space. His most famous works include The Prompter (1988), Many Times (1999), and Double Bind (2001), which was commissioned for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London. Muñoz's untimely death in 2001 at the age of 48 cut short a promising career, but his legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary sculptors around the world.
