Jrp Package is an innovative packaging design project that exemplifies the fusion of ancient Japanese cultural elements with contemporary packaging solutions, specifically created for rice-based products. The design, conceived and executed by Japanese designer Hiroyuki Matsuishi, draws profound inspiration from Jomon pottery, featuring an distinctive octagonal bottle form complemented by a spiral steel lid that pays homage to historical Japanese ceramics. This sophisticated packaging solution was developed to showcase and preserve Japanese ancient food culture, particularly focusing on specialized rice products including Hatsugagenmai and Kouji varieties. The design's distinctive visual language incorporates bold calligraphic elements, with the brand logo executed using traditional brush techniques with abundant ink to capture the powerful aesthetic of Jomon-era modeling. The package, measuring 75x75x90mm, features thoughtfully crafted illustrations - brown rice imagery for Hatsugagenmai and rice ear motifs for the Kouji variant - creating a cohesive visual narrative that connects the product's heritage with its contemporary presentation. This design solution, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2019, successfully differentiates itself in the retail environment through its unique aesthetic approach that consciously avoids following conventional trends. The package's development, completed between March and October 2018 in Kamashi, Fukuoka prefecture, demonstrates a commitment to preserving and communicating Japanese cultural heritage through innovative design solutions, despite facing challenges related to production costs.
