Joseph Moxon

Joseph Moxon was a versatile and accomplished figure of the seventeenth century who made significant contributions to the fields of printing, cartography, and mathematics. He was born in 1627 in Yorkshire, England, and worked as a printer in London before being appointed as Hydrographer to the King in 1660. Moxon was responsible for producing a number of important maps and charts, including the first English world atlas, which was published in 1671. He also wrote several influential books on printing and mathematics, including Mechanick Exercises and Mathematical Dictionary. In addition to his work as a printer and cartographer, Moxon was also a skilled mathematician and instrument maker. He designed and built a number of innovative measuring instruments, including a sector and a proportional compass, which were widely used by navigators and surveyors of the time. Moxon was also an early advocate of the use of logarithms in mathematics, and he published a table of logarithms in his Mathematical Dictionary in 1702. Despite his many accomplishments, Moxon's contributions to the fields of printing, cartography, and mathematics were largely forgotten after his death in 1691. It was not until the twentieth century that scholars began to rediscover his work and recognize his important contributions to these fields.
