Jon Hendricks

Jon Hendricks was an American jazz singer and lyricist who was widely recognized for his contributions to the art of vocalese. Born in 1921 in Newark, Ohio, Hendricks was raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he began singing in church choirs and local bands. He later moved to New York City, where he became a member of the vocal group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, which is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential jazz vocal groups of all time. Hendricks's contributions to the group included his innovative use of scat singing and his development of the technique of vocalese, which involves setting lyrics to previously recorded jazz solos. Hendricks's career as a solo artist and lyricist was equally impressive. He wrote lyrics for many jazz standards, including Centerpiece, Gimme That Wine, and Jumpin' at the Woodside, and collaborated with numerous jazz greats, including Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Art Blakey. Hendricks was also a gifted educator and mentor, and he taught at the University of Toledo and the Manhattan School of Music, among other institutions. Throughout his career, Hendricks received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to jazz music, including a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship in 1993 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential and innovative jazz vocalists and lyricists of all time.
