John Milton
John Milton was a 17th-century English poet, polemicist, and civil servant. He is considered one of the greatest poets in the English language and is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost, which tells the story of Adam and Eve's fall from grace. Milton was also a prominent political figure during his time, advocating for religious freedom and republicanism. He served as a Latin Secretary to Oliver Cromwell during the Commonwealth period and was later imprisoned after the monarchy was restored. Despite his political setbacks, Milton continued to write and publish until his death in 1674. Milton's literary works were heavily influenced by his political and religious beliefs. He was a devout Puritan and believed in the importance of individual liberty and freedom of conscience. His poetry often explored themes of sin, redemption, and the struggle between good and evil. In addition to Paradise Lost, Milton also wrote other notable works such as Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes, and Areopagitica, a defense of free speech and the press. Milton's impact on English literature and culture cannot be overstated. His innovative use of blank verse and his exploration of complex theological and philosophical ideas paved the way for future poets and writers. His influence can be seen in the works of Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth and Percy Bysshe Shelley, as well as in popular culture references to his characters and themes.
