John Major

John Major is a former British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997. He was a member of the Conservative Party and succeeded Margaret Thatcher as the leader of the party and the country. During his time as Prime Minister, Major oversaw significant changes in British society, including the introduction of the National Lottery, the establishment of the National Health Service and the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which led to the creation of the European Union. Born in 1943, Major grew up in South London and left school at the age of 16 to work as a clerk for the Standard Chartered Bank. He later went on to work for other financial institutions before entering politics in the 1970s. He was elected to Parliament in 1979 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party. In 1990, he became the leader of the party and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Major's time as Prime Minister was marked by a number of challenges, including economic recession, rising unemployment and political unrest in Northern Ireland. He also faced criticism from within his own party, with some members accusing him of being too moderate and not conservative enough. Despite these challenges, Major remained committed to his vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Britain. After leaving politics, Major has remained active in public life, serving as a respected elder statesman and commentator on political issues. He has also been involved in a number of charitable organizations, including the National Literacy Trust and the Stroke Association.
