John Banting

John Banting (1895-1966) was a British artist who made significant contributions to the modernist art movement of the early 20th century. He was known for his innovative approach to still life painting, which drew upon a range of artistic styles, including cubism, surrealism, and abstraction. Banting's work was characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and distorted forms, which challenged traditional notions of representation and perspective. In addition to his painting, Banting was also a talented writer and designer. He was a regular contributor to the avant-garde magazine Transition and designed book covers for several notable authors, including James Joyce and T.S. Eliot. Banting was also involved in the London theater scene, designing costumes and sets for productions at the Old Vic and Sadler's Wells. Despite his early success and critical acclaim, Banting's career was somewhat overshadowed by the rise of abstract expressionism in the post-war period. Nevertheless, his legacy continues to be celebrated by art historians and enthusiasts alike, who recognize his contributions to the development of modernist art in Britain.
