Jian Li Ju Theatre Theatre
Jian Li Ju Theatre Theatre is an innovative performance space located in Shanghai, China, that revolutionizes traditional theatrical experiences through its unique architectural and conceptual design. Completed in 2017, this 930-square-meter facility embodies the dramatic elements of film noir, creating an immersive environment where the boundary between audience and performance dissolves. The theatre's design philosophy draws inspiration from Bernard Tschumi's 1976 Screenplays project, incorporating cinematic principles such as distortion, repetition, and superimposition to craft a narrative-driven spatial experience. The interior architecture features a deliberate sequence of contrasting spaces, utilizing a minimalist, monotone palette enhanced by sophisticated lighting strategies that create an atmosphere reminiscent of 1950s Hollywood melodrama. The facility encompasses three distinct 50-square-meter theatre spaces, each accommodating intimate audiences of up to ten visitors, who become integral participants in the performances. The design's innovative approach to visitor circulation begins with individual changing rooms marked by flickering projected numbers, serving as transformative thresholds between the external world and the theatrical experience within. This groundbreaking project, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2018, demonstrates exceptional achievement in merging architectural theory with experiential design, creating a new paradigm for contemporary theatre spaces that prioritizes audience engagement and atmospheric immersion.
