Jaromír Funke

Jaromír Funke was a Czech photographer and artist whose work was influential in the development of modernist photography. Born in 1896 in Skuteč, Bohemia, Funke studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Prague and later at the State School of Graphic Arts. He began his career as a painter but soon turned to photography, which he saw as a more direct means of artistic expression. Funke's photographic work was characterized by his innovative use of light and composition. He was interested in the abstract qualities of photography and sought to create images that were not simply representations of reality but were works of art in their own right. He was particularly interested in the interplay between light and shadow and used this to create striking visual effects in his photographs. One of Funke's most important contributions to photography was his emphasis on the technical aspects of the medium. He believed that photography was not simply a matter of capturing an image but was a complex process that required a deep understanding of the technical elements of the medium. He experimented with different techniques and processes, such as photomontage and photograms, and was always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of the medium. Funke's work had a significant impact on the development of Czech modernist photography and influenced many other photographers in Europe and beyond. He was also an important figure in the Czech avant-garde movement and was associated with the Czech Surrealist group. He died in 1945 at the age of 49.
