Jan Kaplicky
Jan Kaplicky was a Czech architect who was known for his innovative and futuristic designs that challenged traditional architectural norms. He was born in Prague in 1937 and studied architecture at the College of Applied Arts and Architecture in Prague before moving to London in the 1960s. In London, he worked for the renowned architectural firm Foster and Partners before co-founding his own firm, Future Systems, in 1979. Kaplicky's designs were characterized by their organic forms and use of advanced materials and technology. He was particularly interested in the potential of new materials, such as plastics and composites, to create structures that were both aesthetically striking and environmentally sustainable. His most famous works include the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, England, which features a distinctive, undulating facade made of aluminum discs, and the Media Centre at Lord's Cricket Ground in London, which is housed in a futuristic, egg-shaped structure. Kaplicky's designs were not always universally popular, and he faced criticism from some quarters for his unconventional approach. However, he remained committed to pushing the boundaries of what was possible in architecture, and his work continues to inspire architects and designers around the world.
