He was a close friend of Sir Walter Scott and was known for his contributions to Scott's literary works, including illustrations for several of Scott's novels. His paintings were characterized by their delicate and precise brushwork, as well as their use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. Skene's artistic talents were not limited to painting and illustration. He was also a talented musician and composer, and his works included several songs and instrumental pieces. In addition, Skene was a noted collector of books and manuscripts, and his extensive library included many rare and valuable works.
