James Rosenquist

James Rosenquist is a celebrated American artist known for his large and bold canvases. His art, which often juxtaposes images from popular culture in a Pop Art style, is a reflection of his eclectic background. Rosenquist studied painting and drawing in Minnesota, and then moved to New York City. He worked as a billboard painter for several years before his first solo exhibition in 1962. His first solo exhibition marked his transition from commercial to fine art. Many of his well-known works were created in the 1960s, including F-111 (1964-1965), a monumental painting that combines a fighter plane, kitchen appliances, and products of the time. The mural titled Manhattan Penetrable (1966) is another impressive work that is based on the idea of a 3D painting existing in real space. In later years, Rosenquist continued to produce works that explore the interplay between past and present, often using materials such as pebbles, gold, enamel, and glitter enhanced by a vivid color palette.
