James Herbert

James Herbert was a British horror author who made a significant impact on the genre during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in London in 1943, Herbert began his career as an art director for an advertising agency before turning to writing. His first novel, The Rats, was published in 1974 and became an instant bestseller. The book was followed by a string of successful horror novels, including The Fog (1975), The Survivor (1976), and The Dark (1980). Herbert's writing was characterized by graphic violence and a strong sense of dread. He often explored themes of the supernatural and the occult, as well as the darker aspects of human nature. His work was controversial at times, with some critics accusing him of being overly sensationalistic. However, his popularity with readers was undeniable, and he continued to write successful novels well into the 1990s. In addition to his novels, Herbert also wrote several collections of short stories, including The Magic Cottage (1986) and Haunted (1988). He was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his services to literature, and his influence on the horror genre continues to be felt to this day.
