Integrated Circuit

An integrated circuit (IC), also known as a microchip or simply a chip, is a miniature electronic circuit consisting of active and passive components, such as transistors, diodes, resistors, and capacitors, fabricated on a single piece of semiconductor material, typically silicon. The components are interconnected by thin metal wires or conductive traces etched onto the surface of the semiconductor material, forming a complex network of electronic pathways that can perform a wide range of functions, from simple logic operations to complex signal processing. The invention of the integrated circuit is considered one of the most significant technological breakthroughs of the 20th century, as it enabled the development of sophisticated electronic devices that are smaller, faster, and more reliable than their predecessors. ICs are used in a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics, such as smartphones and computers, to industrial automation, medical devices, and aerospace systems. The fabrication of an integrated circuit involves a complex process known as semiconductor manufacturing, which typically involves hundreds of steps, including photolithography, etching, doping, and metallization. The process requires a high degree of precision and control, as even a small defect or impurity can render the entire chip unusable.
