Imatra GIS Electricity Substation

Imatra GIS Electricity Substation is an innovative architectural infrastructure project completed in 2020, situated within the national landscape of Imatrankoski rapids in Eastern Finland, comprising a sophisticated electricity substation building and five designer powerline structures that harmoniously integrate with their surroundings. The substation, measuring 44.1 meters in length, 13.2 meters in width, and 8.1 meters in height, features a distinctive concrete frame construction with double-skin facades, where the exterior layer showcases hand-made long bricks arranged in an intricate zig-zag profile, supported by a steel frame fixed to the inner concrete facades. The design philosophy emphasizes a delicate balance between functional infrastructure and aesthetic sensitivity, breaking down elements of the built context and reassembling them in an abstracted form that pays homage to the historical significance of the area. The transmission structures, constructed from triangular welded steel profiles, echo the geometric motifs of the brick cladding, creating a cohesive visual language throughout the project. This unmanned facility, which operates primarily through remote control, represents a significant achievement in infrastructure design, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category for its innovative approach to combining industrial functionality with architectural excellence. The project's success lies in its careful consideration of the surrounding landscape, achieved through extensive research and prototyping using detailed point-cloud data, resulting in a design that creates a new historical layer while maintaining timeless appeal and contextual harmony.
