Illusory Aromatherapy Diffuser is an innovative sustainable design solution that reimagines the traditional concept of fragrance diffusion by integrating packaging functionality with product purpose. Developed by designers Jingyi Miao and Hu Zou, this environmentally conscious creation addresses the significant issue of packaging waste by transforming what would typically be discarded protective material into an essential component of the product itself. The diffuser utilizes BONDED FOAM, a recycled sponge material known for its durability, compression resistance, and aging-resistant properties, as both protective packaging and the primary fragrance-diffusing medium. The design's dimensions of 80 mm x 40 mm x 160 mm were determined through extensive statistical analysis and ergonomic testing to optimize fragrance retention and dispersal capabilities. The porous nature of the sponge material enables even distribution and sustained release of aromatherapy liquids, while its structural properties provide essential protection for the accompanying fragrance bottle during transport. The aesthetic appeal of the design is enhanced by its ethereal, illusory edges, created by the varying porosity of the sponge material, which complements the ethereal nature of aromatic experiences. This innovative approach to sustainable design, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and dual-purpose functionality can reduce environmental impact while maintaining product effectiveness. The translucent frosted outer packaging creates an intriguing visual effect, allowing users to glimpse the diffuser's form within, similar to a perfume bottle, thereby enhancing the overall design aesthetic and user experience.
