Ignition Coils

Ignition coils are essential components of the ignition system in internal combustion engines. They are responsible for converting low voltage from the battery into high voltage required to ignite the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. The process of ignition involves a spark that is generated by the ignition coil, which ignites the fuel and air mixture, leading to combustion and power generation. Ignition coils are typically made of two coils of wire wrapped around an iron core. One coil is the primary coil, which is connected to the battery and the ignition switch, while the other is the secondary coil, which is connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs. When the ignition switch is turned on, a small amount of current flows through the primary coil, creating a magnetic field around the iron core. When the current is interrupted, the magnetic field collapses, inducing a high voltage in the secondary coil, which is then sent to the distributor cap and spark plugs. Ignition coils are critical components of the ignition system, and their failure can result in a range of problems, including misfires, rough idling, and reduced engine power. Symptoms of a failing ignition coil include difficulty starting the engine, poor fuel economy, and the illumination of the check engine light. Regular maintenance and replacement of faulty ignition coils can help ensure optimal engine performance and prevent costly repairs.
