Igniting Magnetos For Engines
Igniting magnetos are a type of electrical generator used in internal combustion engines to produce the high voltage needed to ignite the fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders. The magneto is a self-contained unit that generates electrical power without the need for an external power source. It consists of a rotating magnet, a primary coil, and a secondary coil. When the magnet rotates, it creates a magnetic field that induces a voltage in the primary coil. This voltage is then amplified in the secondary coil to produce the high voltage needed for ignition. Igniting magnetos are commonly used in small engines, such as those found in lawnmowers, chainsaws, and outboard motors. They are also used in aircraft engines, where their reliability and simplicity make them a popular choice. In fact, many vintage aircraft still use magneto ignition systems today. One of the advantages of igniting magnetos is their ability to operate independently of the engine's electrical system. This means that even if the battery or alternator fails, the engine can still be started and run using the magneto. Additionally, because the magneto generates its own power, it does not place a significant load on the engine's electrical system, which can help to extend the life of the battery and other electrical components. Despite their many advantages, igniting magnetos do have some limitations. They are not as efficient as other types of ignition systems, and they can be more difficult to adjust and maintain. However, for many applications, the simplicity and reliability of the magneto make it the ideal choice for igniting internal combustion engines.
