I O Hotel Reception Space
I O Hotel Reception Space is an innovative architectural interior design project located in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, that exemplifies contemporary hotel design through its sophisticated integration of natural light, structural elements, and diverse materials. Named after Jupiter's innermost Galilean moon IO, this 2,500-square-meter space occupies the top floor of a commercial building, offering panoramic views of the urban landscape while creating a tranquil sanctuary above the city. The design's most distinctive feature is its treatment of the original oblique roof structure, which has been reimagined through the addition of glass ceiling elements and perforated aluminum sheets that create a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadows. The interior design philosophy deliberately eschews conventional stylistic constraints, instead embracing a diverse material palette that includes terrazzo, ultrathin stone, timber, and leather coverings to create rich textural contrasts. The space encompasses 36 unique guest rooms, each conceived as an independent unit within a larger unified system, reflecting the astronomical theme of its namesake. The project, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to challenging architectural constraints, particularly in its solution to the sloped roof structure, where the design team transformed oblique angles into 90-degree junctions while incorporating skylights for natural illumination. The sophisticated material selection and architectural interventions create a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal, establishing a distinctive hospitality environment that responds thoughtfully to its urban context while offering guests an elevated experience of luxury and tranquility.
