Hydraulic Rim Brakes
Hydraulic rim brakes are a type of brake system that uses hydraulic fluid to transmit force from the brake lever to the rim of a bicycle wheel. The system consists of a brake lever, hydraulic hoses, a master cylinder, and two brake calipers that are mounted on the fork and seat stay of the bicycle frame. When the brake lever is squeezed, it pushes hydraulic fluid through the hoses and into the master cylinder, which in turn applies pressure to the brake calipers. This pressure causes the brake pads to clamp down on the rim of the wheel, slowing or stopping the bicycle. Hydraulic rim brakes are known for their superior stopping power and modulation compared to other types of rim brakes, such as mechanical rim brakes. This is due to the fact that hydraulic fluid is incompressible, which means that all of the force applied to the brake lever is transmitted directly to the brake calipers. Additionally, hydraulic rim brakes are self-adjusting, meaning that the brake pads automatically adjust to maintain consistent braking performance as they wear down. One drawback of hydraulic rim brakes is that they can be more difficult to maintain and repair than mechanical rim brakes. The hydraulic hoses and master cylinder require periodic bleeding to remove air bubbles and maintain optimal brake performance. Additionally, if a hydraulic hose or seal fails, it can result in a loss of braking power and potentially dangerous situation. Despite their maintenance requirements, hydraulic rim brakes are a popular choice for high-performance road and cyclocross bicycles due to their superior stopping power and modulation.
