Howard Finster

Howard Finster (1916-2001) is considered one of the most significant American popular artists of the 20th century. He was born in Valley Head, Alabama and grew up in a family of traditional farmers, who looked askance at his artistic interests. Later in life, he moved to Georgia, eventually settling in the city of Summerville, where he established Paradise Garden, a small but intensely creative “museum” of art and architecture. Finster created spiritually charged paintings and sculptures, often combining everyday objects, from bicycle parts to Coca-Cola bottles, with his drawings and paintings. His most famous works include God's Candy Store (1989) and The Last Supper with Apples (1987). His art was an expression of his mission to spread the message of Christianity, reflecting his own faith in a unique and vivid style.
