House of Flowers Winery is an architecturally distinguished hospitality venue and wine-tasting destination that exemplifies sustainable adaptive reuse in contemporary winery design. Located on a 13.5-acre hilltop property, this 15,700-square-foot facility represents a masterful transformation of existing warehouse structures into an elegant, purpose-driven space that harmoniously integrates with its vineyard surroundings. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2021, showcases a thoughtful approach to preservation and modernization. The facility features a sophisticated interplay of indoor and outdoor spaces, incorporating high-performance materials and sustainable design elements such as highly-insulated walls, strategic glazing, and preserved structural components to reduce embodied carbon. The architectural narrative unfolds through a carefully choreographed sequence, beginning with an entry through a redwood grove, leading to dark-stained exterior facades that contrast with warm, cypress-clad interiors. The building's elevated design incorporates large roof overhangs, vertical wood screens for solar protection, and strategically placed skylights that flood the interior with natural light. Multiple tasting areas accommodate various group sizes, while the integration of amenities such as an outdoor wood-fired oven enhances the visitor experience. The project, completed in June 2019, demonstrates exceptional attention to spatial planning, environmental consciousness, and the preservation of rural vernacular forms while creating a contemporary destination that celebrates both wine culture and architectural innovation.
