House In Chitose Residential House
House in Chitose Residential House is an innovative five-story residential architectural project located in a densely populated area of Tokyo, Japan, completed in 2013 by architect Hironari Itoi. This remarkable structure, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a thoughtful response to both urban living challenges and post-2011 earthquake considerations in Japan. The building, encompassing 286.41 square meters of total floor area on a 100.25 square meter plot, ingeniously combines office and residential spaces while addressing crucial concerns of natural light, ventilation, and disaster preparedness. The design's distinctive features include straight staircases throughout all five floors for improved emergency access, dual energy systems utilizing both gas and electric utilities for resilience, and strategic use of color in interior spaces to maintain brightness even during power outages. The lower floors are purposefully designed with fewer walls to accommodate office space, while the upper floors are dedicated to residential use, employing reinforced concrete construction to ensure structural integrity while maintaining spatial flexibility. The project exemplifies a progressive approach to urban residential architecture, incorporating disaster-resistant features while creating a multifunctional living space that serves as both a shelter and a comprehensive life base, effectively eliminating commute times and maximizing family interaction through its innovative work-life integration concept.
