Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf
Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the concept of multifunctional living through its transformative capabilities, created by Chinese designer Yu Ren. This sophisticated piece seamlessly integrates three distinct functions - a coat rack, shelf, and table lamp - into a single cohesive unit, drawing inspiration from the symbolic nature of hourglasses and the passage of time. The design, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, features a thoughtfully engineered structure comprising colored stainless steel components and two environmentally conscious laminate plates of varying dimensions, connected via angle iron screws. Standing at 1700mm in height with a footprint of 500mm by 500mm, this versatile furniture piece adapts its functionality throughout the day: serving as a coat rack in the morning, a storage shelf during midday, and transforming into an ambient light source in the evening through its detachable lamp component. The innovative design incorporates low-temperature light sources for safe operation and user comfort, while its modular construction allows for flexible usage across various living spaces. The furniture piece emerged from extensive research involving over two hundred participants, addressing the modern urban dweller's need for space-efficient, multifunctional furniture solutions. Its aesthetic appeal lies not only in its practical versatility but also in its philosophical approach to design, encouraging users to appreciate the rhythmic progression of daily life while offering a sophisticated solution to contemporary storage and lighting needs.
