Hotaru Stool is an innovative furniture design that seamlessly integrates seating and lighting functionalities, created by Japanese designer Misaki Kiyuna in 2022. This multifunctional piece represents a thoughtful response to the increased time spent at home during the global pandemic, specifically designed to enhance the reading experience in domestic spaces. The design features a minimalist yet sophisticated construction comprising four main components: the seat, feet, stand, and lighting element, which can be assembled without metal fittings through an ingenious use of laminated plywood that preserves the natural warmth of wood. Available in two sizes to accommodate different user demographics, the larger version measures 380mm in width and height with a 1890mm depth, while the compact version measures 350mm in width and height with a 1790mm depth. The design's most distinctive feature is its responsive lighting system that activates in darkness when human presence is detected, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the gentle illumination of fireflies, which inspired its Japanese name Hotaru. The lighting element, integrated into the backrest, can be adjusted horizontally to optimize the reading experience, while also serving as a practical side table solution when placed beside a bed. This versatile piece, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, exemplifies space-efficient design particularly suited to compact Japanese living spaces, combining functionality with poetic concept development that draws from Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and cultural values.
