Hot Stone Rai Fitzrovia Restaurant

Hot Stone Rai Fitzrovia Restaurant is an exemplary interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Japanese architectural elements with contemporary dining aesthetics, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Conceived and executed by British designer Mika Kanayama, this 114-square-meter space harmoniously combines natural oak elements, traditional Japanese joinery techniques, and thoughtfully curated artistic features to create an immersive dining environment. The design's focal points include carefully crafted wooden panels inspired by Japanese latticework (Itoya Koushi), circular elements drawing from the moon-viewing tradition, and an prominently displayed Hokusai Ukiyo-e print featuring Peonies and Butterfly. The space's sophisticated architectural elements incorporate timber cross-joint carpentry inspired by traditional Kigumi techniques, while cylindrical paper lanterns suspended within the over-bar frame create dynamic interplays of light and shadow. The color palette juxtaposes raw oak with olive green upholstery, black-stained banquette seating, and a carbon black floor, creating a deep yet subtle atmosphere. The design successfully overcame significant challenges in implementing traditional Japanese joinery while meeting modern fire safety regulations, requiring innovative solutions in material selection and construction methods. The sushi bar area features offset oak slats set against a vertical pink gradation, demonstrating a thoughtful transition between traditional and contemporary design elements. Completed in 2021, this interior space exemplifies how cultural design elements can be reimagined within a modern context, creating an environment that enhances the dining experience through its artistic and architectural merit.
