Hive MultiPod
Hive MultiPod is an innovative architectural furniture design that represents a significant advancement in breakout space solutions, manifesting as a 315-degree open-fronted vertical slatted dome structure. Created by British designer Clive Walters, this forward-thinking furniture piece is composed of seven precisely engineered 45-degree radii segments, forming a spherical concept that combines dramatic presence with functional utility. The structure, standing at 2000mm in height with an internal diameter of 2900mm and external diameter of 3400mm, is crafted from high-quality Swiss CDF (Compact Density Fibreboard), a uniquely sealed, black-colored material with a density exceeding 1000kg/m³ that enables revolutionary applications in interior construction. The design's innovative use of vertical slats creates compelling visual effects from within the pod, while its construction methodology emphasizes minimal material usage through an intelligent system of interlocking panels secured with dowels and connector bolts. Each segment is manufactured using sophisticated CNC programming, offering versatility in assembly options for either manufacturer or end-user construction. The Hive MultiPod, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a solution specifically developed for maximizing the potential of large open public spaces, transforming traditionally underutilized areas into functional meeting and breakout zones. Its futuristic aesthetic, inspired by advanced architectural forms, challenges conventional furniture design paradigms while maintaining a perfect balance between experimental vision and practical functionality. The project, developed between September 2012 and March 2013, demonstrates exceptional attention to structural engineering and spatial efficiency, offering a distinctive combination of visual impact and practical utility in contemporary workplace environments.
