Hillside House Single House

Hillside House Single House is an innovative architectural masterpiece located in Hsinchu, Taiwan, exemplifying a harmonious integration between modern residential design and natural topography. Conceived and executed by architects Hom Liou and Bruce Wang between 2014 and 2017, this 660-square-meter residence challenges traditional Taiwanese residential conventions through its distinctive split-box design concept. The structure comprises four rectangular volumes that respond dynamically to the hillside terrain, creating a sophisticated interplay between built form and landscape. Each volume serves specific functional requirements while maintaining visual and physical connections through carefully orchestrated ramps, stairs, and pathways. The architectural composition employs reinforced concrete structure with steel and glass elements, enabling the boxes to either insert into, touch, or float above the ground plane, generating varied spatial experiences and framed views of the surrounding nature. This Gold A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to addressing the complexity of daily life on a sloping site. The design philosophy emphasizes the metaphysical relationship between human habitation and natural environment, incorporating elements such as sunlight, wind, and rain as integral components of the living experience. The project's significance lies in its successful challenge to conservative residential design traditions in Taiwan, offering a new vision for contemporary living that maintains high-quality residential standards while fostering a deeper connection with nature through architectural intervention.
